Take Your Standing Desk to the Next Level With a Treadmill!

If you're a regular reader of our blog, you already know that sitting all day is unhealthy and uncomfortable at best, and life-threatening at worst. Standing desks have been gaining popularity for a while now and treadmill desks seem to be close on their heels.
While a standing desk will allow you to either stand or sit, the treadmill desk gives you yet another option, allowing you to sit, stand, or walk in place while you're working.
NPR's Morning Edition recently ran a story on the treadmill desk phenomenon, titled "Can You Move It and Work It On A Treadmill Desk?" It mentions that, as with any new routine, you'll want to ease yourself into walking while working. You can start by standing, then walking for half an hour at a time or so, and work your way up from there. Eventually, you'll find yourself walking more and more each day.
I usually start out the day standing and sometimes don't notice for an hour or two that I still haven't sat down! If you're interested in standing at work and using a treadmill while you work, check out our Steelcase Walkstation, which pairs a durable adjustable height standing desk with a treadmill.
Offices that have a "Biggest Loser" competition, or just a healthy sense of (friendly!) competition, may be interested in the UPLIFT Lifespan Treadmill Desk, with its four-month LifeSpan Fitness Club free trial, that allows users to track workout goals, progress and results.
If you're anything like me, you have good intentions of working out before or after work, but that doesn't always happen. With a treadmill desk, you can easily get some activity into your daily schedule, without having to find extra time. According to the NPR story, a financial consulting firm in Minnesota took part in a Mayo Clinic study of treadmill desks. "For six months, they rotated on and off the desks, walking, on average, about three hours a day. Everyone lost weight. And overall ... health improved ... Total cholesterol decreased, plasma triglycerides dropped on average 37 percent in total for all 18 participants." In addition to the health benefits, the company also had its highest revenues ever during the time the study was taking place, dispelling any fears of distraction or lower productivity.
